Birth Matters

BirthMatters is a dedicated nonprofit organization empowering young parents in Spartanburg County through free, community-based doula services and reproductive health education. Since its origins in 2007–2009 when it received initial funding and began training doulas, BirthMatters evolved into an independent 501(c)(3) by 2012 and has since supported over 60 families across Spartanburg and Cherokee Counties, delivering hundreds of prenatal and postpartum sessions. The organization centers its impact on young and low-income birthing individuals—especially those aged 24 and younger—by offering continuous doula care from pregnancy through the baby’s first year, fostering informed and confident healthcare advocacy. Employing a community health worker model, BirthMatters also brings together services like teen pregnancy prevention, chiropractic and emotional support, and community outreach events to address systemic health disparities and build a more equitable maternal care system
